England captain and Real Madrid star David Beckham
Becks: We were punished
By James Wright. Sunday, 16 November 2003.
England captain David Beckham was naturally disappointed to have lost to Denmark, but feels that England should try to take positives out of the performance...
England took the lead twice at Old Trafford only to let the Danes back in the game.
"In the first five to 10 minutes both teams were attacking. Unfortunately we let them get back in it," the England captain said.
"If you don't defend well right through the team you are punished. Most friendlies are quite open and they attacked well and so did we."
The second half saw Denmark repeatedly threaten the England goal with pace on the counter-attack and the matchn proved to be a real test for England's younger players.
"It's best that our mistakes happen in friendlies rather than when we get to Portugal in Euro 2004.
"Results matter - you always want to win. It was disappointing not to win here but the fans have seen a good game."
Beckham left the field midway through the second half and there were fears that the back injury he picked up whilst playing for Real Madrid had surfaced again.
"My back seized up on me at the end of the first half. I thought it would go after a massage but it should be fine."
