Charlton Athletic midfielder and England new boy Scott Parker.
By James Wright. Monday, 10 November 2003.
Sven-Goran Eriksson has named his latest England squad for Sunday's match against Denmark at Old Trafford...
Michael Owen, Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves were all ruled out of Sunday's game through injury but as a result there are a few fresh faces.
The squad includes Charlton Athletic's Scott Parker, who has been in sensational form for his club, driving them to fourth place in the Premiership. Though he has been called up to the squad before, he has yet to win his first cap but could do so on Sunday.
In the squad for the first time is Chelsea's Glen Johnson, who has enjoyed a wonderful start to the season with his new club. Johnson scored infront of a watching Sven on Saturday and now could win his first cap after picking up seven at Under-21 level.
"I think they [Johnson and Parker] deserve it. I have seen them a lot recently and they are playing better and better.
"It is a friendly but I think they are two who look as if they could be ready for 2004 maybe."
The squad also sees a return to England colours for centre-back Gareth Southgate and Sven explained the decision behind the 'Boro skipper's recall: "There are three central defenders out, Ferdinand, Campbell and Woodgate and I thought it was fair to give Southgate a chance again. "I have seen him many times this season and I pick the squad I think is best for the moment.
"It is my job to take the best players I think will do the best for England."
Sven has picked only three strikers but he insisted that those forwards who have been left out still had a chance next time.
"Beattie now just has to go on working hard, go on scoring goals. It is not the end of his career because he hasn't been picked for Denmark.
"My message to [Alan] Smith is the same. Go on working and scoring and probably he will have the chance. After Denmark there are still friendlies before Portugal."
Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole also finds himself in the squad once more: "Joe Cole is playing very good football and this moment," Sven said.
"Exactly how he is going to play in midfield I am not sure yet. "He is a lot more mature, better passes, stronger, quicker and has a lot more experience. He is becoming better and better."
