England celebrate Euro 2004 qualification in Istanbul
Istanbul: How it happenedBy James Wright. Saturday, 11 October 2003.
A full round-up of all the action, minute by minute, from England's 0-0 draw in Istanbul...
': The game gets underway and Wayne Rooney gets down the right flank. Gary Neville's throw-in finds Heskey who heads wide.
': England have settled well as John Terry heads a long Turkish ball back to David James.
': Steven Gerrard turns his man and wins a corner. Beckham takes it but Turkey breakaway.
': Good play from Butt breaks up the Turkish counter and he feeds Beckham on the right, whose cross fails to find anyone in the centre.
': Paul Scholes finds Heskey out on the right and the big Liverpool man wins a free-kick.
': Beckham takes it and finds Gerrard on the left, who crosses but finds noone.
': England have started well and are imposing themselves on the game. Scholes is seeing a lot of the ball.
': Scholes' long ball to Rooney finds the Everton man racing ahead of the defence but his cross from the byline is cut out by Recber.
': Rooney, again out on the right, gets behind the Turkish back four but he hits his cross too hard and it floats out of play.
': James collects a ball on the very edge of his area, only just staying inside his area.
': Scholes is nearly played in by Fatih when the Turkish defender hits his clearance into the Man United man's back. Fortunately for him, Recber comes out to claim.
': Campbell cuts out a Turkish forward ball and England break through Beckham.
': Heskey cannot control another long ball forward from the England midfielders.
': A ball in from Gary Neville is headed just over from Scholes.
': An acrobatic volley from Nihat is well saved from David James - easily Turkey's best effort so far.
': Sol Campbell cuts out another threatening attack - Nihat looked as though he was about to break through to get one-on-one with James.
': Turkey are coming into the game more and more. Nihat beats Terry but is tackled by Neville then a cross is cut out, this time by Terry.
': A poor mistake from Alpay gives the ball away to Beckham and his lofted pass is latched onto by Rooney. With Recber charging out to challenge, the 17-year-old chips the ball high and it falls just over the bar, onto the roof of the net.
': Emre shoots at goal and his dipping effort is punched over the bar by James. Three corners come to nothing for Turkey as England hold firm.
': Heskey shoots along the ground from 30 yards, which Recber flicks away for a corner.
': From the left-wing corner the ball is cleared only as far as Steven Gerrard who strikes the ball perfectly. Hakan Sukur manages to get himself in the way to send the effort out for a corner.
': Turkey win a corner when Campbell flicks a dangerous inswinging corner out of play. Nothing comes of the set piece as Campbell clears again.
': Okan fouls Ashley Cole as England try to calm down an increasingly confident Turkey.
': Referee Collina blows for a foul by Gerrard on Emre. Nihat strikes it from 35 yards but it goes straight to James, who catches the ball comfortably.
': Emile Heskey goes down injured after he is caught by accident in a fifty-fifty cahllenge for the ball.
': Rooney and Heskey combine for Rooney to shoot wide of goal. Unfortunately for the Merseyside duo, they never got the ball under control in what was a promising situation.
': David James slices Scholes' pass back to cause a moment of anxiety for England but thankfully Cole and Campbell clear.
': The ball is fed to Scholes who quickly passes out to Gerrard on the right. He cuts in from the left, passes one Turkish defender and then, as he turns into the box, has his trailing leg taken from under him by Tugay - referee Collina, just a few yards away, gives the penalty! However Beckham slips as he runs up to take the spot kick, his left foot giving way from under him, and the ball sails high over Recber's bar.
': England are suddenly playing with wonderful attacking verve - a bit of Rooney brilliance sees him cut in from the right but just as he is about to shoot from the edge of the area, Scholes rushes in to take it out of his path. The United man shoots but the ball goes just past the right post, with Recber beaten.
': England really playing well but three good chances have now gone begging - let's hope that they don't rue those spurned efforts.
': Fatih's cross finds Sergen unmarked but the Besiktas man's header from ten yards is easy for James to fall down on and save.
': Nihat gets behind the English defence for the first time and his cross from the byline is fired in with pace. The ball takes a wicked deflection off Campbell straight at James who reacts well to clear the ball for a corner.
+1': Another ball tossed into the area sees Emre and Campbell get mixed up as the ball runs loose... Terry clears before a red shirted player can latch onto it.
+2: Sergen's free-kick, given for a foul by Butt, sails over the bar - England reach half-time on level terms but they could be leading by two.
Half Time: TURKEY 0-0 ENGLAND
': Straight from the re-start Scholes knocks a little ball over for Rooney to run clear. Rooney keeps the ball in but slices his cross-shot over the bar.
': Heskey does well to hold the ball up but he is eventually robbed of the ball and Turkey break quickly, though their efforts lead to just a goal-kick.
': Nihat's cross is cleared by Campbell as England begin to sit back.
': The game has settled down as both Turkey and England try to get a little time on the ball.
': Gary Neville's clears a dangerous little ball away for a throw-in on the far side.
': Scholes, using the outside of his right foot, flicks the ball out to Gerrard on the left but Scholes can't quite pick up Gerrard's return pass.
': Heskey limps off carrying another injury. It didn't look to serious so hopefully he'll return to the fray in a moment.
': Gerrrad launches along ball up to Rooney who fouls Alpay in his attempt to get to the ball ahead of the Villa defender.
': Ibrahim gets down the right but Terry nods away his cross as Heskey comes back on after picking up a knock.
': A quick pass into the area beats Terry as Hakan Sukur falls to the ground - no foul given.
' Turkey booking Yellow card shown by Collina to Hakan Sukur.
': England nearly find a way through via the combined efforts of Rooney and Beckham but neither player can get a shot away.
': Turkey win a corner on the right which is taken and cleared as far as Sergen on the edge of the area. he shoots high and wide of the goal.
' Turkey substitution Tuncay comes on for Sergen
': England clear yet another ball forward and break through Butt who finds Beckham. Tugay goes in and fouls the England skipper.
' Turkey booking Tugay is booked for his challenge on Beckham.
': David James comes out to claim a left-wing corner.
': There is a goalmouth scramble in the England box as Nihat, running through behind the England defence, crosses but after Campbell and James block, there is a Turkish handball which Collina spots and blows for.
' England and Turkey subsitutions Ilhan Mansiz is for Okan whilst Darius Vassell has come on for Heskey.
': Hakan Sukur and Terry jump for an inswinging right-wing cross which flicks off the Chelsea man's head to go out for a corner.
' England substitution Kieron Dyer has come on for 17-year-old Wayne Rooney who had another wonderful match for his country.
': Scholes and Gerrard try to combine to get a counter-attack going but Tugay is there to break things up.
': Turkey win their ninth corner of the match but the ball is cleared comfortably enough.
': Alpay, Nihat and Emre exchange passes but Nihat can't control the ball and it goes out for a throw-in to England.
': Vassell suddenly has time and space in the Turkish area... he takes his time before shooting with his right-foot, trying to curl it into the far right corner.... the ball goes just past the post.
': Kieron Dyer appears to get beyond the defence. He crosses to David Beckham who heads into the far corner of the net for a goal!!!! But no - the referee's assistant has flagged for offside. It's a marginal decision.
': England clear the ball long towards Dyer five yards into the Turkish half. As the high ball drops, Dyer is challenged by Recber who flies in with a scissor-kick, dangerously high. Dyer goes down injured.
' Turkish booking Recber is cautioned by Collina, and rightly so - it was an awful attempted tackle.
': Dyer does well and wins a corner, though it comes to nothing.
': Vassell and Dyer, England's furthest forward players, are looking sharp. Vassell beats his man, cuts in from the right and runs at Alpay, whose tackle trickles out for another corner.
': Dyer tries to beat his man out on the right touchline but the ball runs out of play.
': Tuncay tries a snap-shot from all of 25 yards and with James beaten the ball flies narrowly wide of the goal.
' England substitution Frank Lampard comes on Paul Scholes, who has played really well for his country.
+1': Kieron Dyer runs at goal unchallenged, he cuts inside and lays the ball off for Lampard. The Chelsea man's shot hits Alpay and falls for Beckham, who comes in on his left foot and shoots narrowly over.
+2': Butt heads another ball clear... Turkey come again and the ball is cleared as far as Nihat who shoots just wide of the post...
+3': Pierluigi Collina puts his whistle to his mouth and blows for full-time - England have won the group and have qualified for Euro 2004!!!!
