"I remember the build-up to this game was massive because we knew that if we were going to qualify automatically for the World Cup, we had to go to Germany and get something from the game - never an easy task.

"But the new manager had just come in and we were high on confidence. We believed we could go there and win.

"The game didn't start brilliantly - they went one-nil up quite early but we kept our composure and Michael got an equaliser soon afterwards.

"After that, it was one of those games that everything went right. I got my first ever England goal and it came at a great time.

"Just before half-time a ball dropped to me on the edge of the area. I controlled it on my chest and hit it full on the volley. It bent just inside the post. In terms of the quality of the strike and the time it came, it probably rates as the best that I've scored. I remember sliding along the turf afterwards - it was a great feeling.

"We ran riot a bit in the second half with my Liverpool team-mates Michael Owen and Emile Heskey scoring another three goals between them. It was probably the match that we really came together as a team. It gave us so much belief too.

"When you've experienced an occasion like that, it only makes you hungrier to get back there. That's what we're all aiming towards at the moment."

And Steven was happy to lend his support to the Strip for Shelter campaign: "Growing up, I saw the effects that poor housing can have on the people around me, so I am delighted to be able to help Shelter in their work supporting homeless and badly housed families.
