Opened in 1907 for a match between Suffolk and Cambridge an inter county friendly and first hosted an Ipswich Town League match in the spring of 1938 when the Tractor Boys played Southend United.

Tomorrow night's match is the first time that England have played in the Suffolk town, but in 1959 Portman Road hosted an unofficial international between Great Britain and The Caribbean.

Floodlights were first turned on for a friendly in 1960 which saw the home side take on London giants Arsenal. Those lights were recently upgraded for Ipswich's forays into European competition.

The overall look of the ground has greatly improved, with the re-development of both the Greene King (South) Stand and the North Stand in the last couple of years.

Outside the ground, there are now two statues of the former Ipswich and England managers Sir Alf Ramsay (on the corner between the Cobbold and North Stand) and Sir Bobby Robson, which is placed behind the Cobbold Stand in Portman Road.
