In all the games that the dynamic young Liverpool midfielder has appeared in since he was handed his debut by Kevin Keegan in a May 2000 friendly against Ukraine at Wembley, England have never lost. Of those 18 matches, the Three Lions have won 14 times and drawn four.

So, is it a record? Well yes, we believe that Alan Ball, who lost for the first time in his 18th England international, previously held the record. Bally's sequence without defeat included 13 wins and four draws - and those wins, of course, included the matches in the 1966 World Cup Finals.

Two top central defenders, Roy McFarland and Des Walker, came close to Gerrard's new mark by tasting defeat in their 17th England match.

However Gerrard has some way to go to set a new mark for consecutive England matches without defeat. Another World Cup hero, Roger Hunt, lost in his third England match but England then remained unbeaten in his next 27! There were 22 wins and five draws and Roger notched 16 goals.
