England goalkeeping coach Ray Clemence has welcomed Ian Walker back into the international fold, revealing that the Leicester man has been in 'top form' all season...
Walker has today been named in Sven's England squad to face South Africa, Serbia and Montenegro and Slovakia and Clemence has no doubts that the former Tottenham stopper deserves his chance.
"I've seen Ian play on a number of occasions this season and so have other members of my goalkeeping staff," he told us.
"He's been highly impressive and consistent all season and I'm sure any member of staff or any of fans at Leicester will tell you that he's been a big influence in a season that's seen them win promotion back to the Premier League."
Clemence confirmed that Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright, who was included in the squad that defeated Liechtenstein and Turkey, was carrying an injury. "Richard Wright has a small problem that needs to be sorted out so he was unavailable for selection," he said.
"And, when you're looking for someone to bring in, if there is a candidate who is not only in top form but who also has previous international experience, then they become the obvious choice. Ian Walker fulfils those criteria."
Ian Walker last joined up with the England squad for the World Cup Qualifier against Albania at St James Park in September 2001. He has three full caps to date.
