A walk-over may have been expected but Ralf Loose's team from the world's fourth smallest country put up a valiant effort and had a number of chances to respond to England's two goals.

Michael Owen's head provided the first after 28 minutes following Emile Heskey's nice work on the right, and skipper David Beckham added the second 8 minutes after the break. However, the home side crafted some openings for themselves and as well as coming close in the opening moments, opportunities for Frick, Nigg and Stocklasa could have made the scoreline less flattering to Sven's men and after the England coach revealed his relief.

"At least there were three points we wanted and I think we did a professional job," said Sven.

"Maybe there was a little bit of a lack of concentration at the end when they had chances to score."

Eriksson told his players to liven the game up in the second half: "We tried to play the ball quicker, to move it quicker," he said.

"That's one way to make life difficult for Liechtenstein.

"The last 10 to 15 minutes we lacked concentration. We gave them one or two chances to score, we shouldn't do that really."

Skipper David Beckham added: "It was important to get three points and we got them. We played some good football. They created a couple more chances than we would have liked though."

"At half-time we were told to keep up the tempo, keep them guessing and keep playing our football. We did that."

First goalscorer Michael Owen praised Liverpool team-mate Emile Heskey, whose cross set him up.

"Emile did well to set up the cross up for the goal. He worked hard as he always does. He roughed a few up."

Owen added: "Turkey was always the main game in our group. We knew it was the big one. We expected to win [against Liechtenstein] and it didn't make any difference how we won.

"The main thing was three points and now it's on to Turkey."

And Turkey will provide a tougher test on Wednesday night in Sunderland but England are foccused on one thing, a win. Beckham added: "I don't think they will be worrying about our game but their team and their game. If we can get three points everyone will be happy."
