SOL CAMPBELL'S participation in England's friendly against Portugal was ruled out when the star defender suffered a hip injury in Sunday's 1-1 draw against Chelsea even though he lasted 90 minutes and put in a man-of-the-match performance.

In addition, goalkeeper DAVID SEAMAN was said to be "upset" by Chelsea's opening goal when Gianfranco Zola's 40-yard free-kick eluded everyone and bounced in. Wenger though told England's number one not to be too harsh on himself, saying the defence was as much to blame.

"He had Gudjohnsen just in front of him so if the ball deflects he has no chance to save it," said Wenger. "David is upset with the goal but I felt we were a bit passive. We waited for the ball a little bit."

Sven was at Upton Park on Saturday to see West Ham's promising youngsters get a taste of Premiership harsh reality. JERMAIN DEFOE, JOE COLE and MICHAEL CARRICK were all in The Hammers side beaten 2-0 at home by Charlton whose manager Alan Curbishley highlighted the performances of his own Englishmen.

Curbishley sang the praises of RICHARD RUFUS and England under-21 international JON FORTUNE, who scored the second goal. "They were fantastic and I can't see a better English defender in the Premiership than Rufus. Perhaps we don't shout enough about our young players at Charlton," he said.

There has been a lot of debate about whether over-30s MARTIN KEOWN and TEDDY SHERINGHAM should be retained by Eriksson for the European Championship qualifying campaign. Well, 36-year-old Sheringham delivered his response on Saturday; staying cool to slot home a last-minute penalty that gave Spurs a 2-1 win against Southampton and put them top of the Premiership.

Tord Grip was at St Andrews on Saturday and saw LEE BOWYER score in Leeds United's 2-1 defeat against Birmingham. Goal apart, Bowyer didn't give one of his best performances and it was a disappointing day all-round for Terry Venables' side with other England hopefuls ALAN SMITH and NICK BARMBY muscled out of it while young PAUL ROBINSON was beaten by two magnificent strikes by Paul Devlin and Damien Johnson.

DAVID BECKHAM was in the Manchester United side that drew 1-1 at Sunderland - but his biggest news of the weekend was still a few hours away; becoming a father for the second time with the birth of baby son Romeo.

Frustratingly for Sven, PAUL SCHOLES, NICKY BUTT, WES BROWN and GARY NEVILLE were all missing from The Stadium of Light because of injury.

SVEN WATCH At Upton Park to see David James beaten twice by Charlton, while Messrs Cole, Sinclair, Carrick and Defoe couldn't breach the visitors' defence.
