England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is to be honoured alongside Howard Wilkinson.
Sven and Howard Receive UK Honours
Wednesday, 05 December 2001.
The Football Association today applauded the news that England Head Coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and FA Technical Director Howard Wilkinson are to receive special recognition at this year's sports coach UK Coach of the Year Awards ceremony. HRH The Princess Royal will present awards during a ceremony at The Cafe Royal, London.
Sven-Goran Eriksson is one of two coaches selected for the UK Coach of the Year award, after superbly guiding England through qualifications stages of the World Cup. He will receive his award alongside Alex Stanton (coach to World Cross Country and Half Marathon Champion - Paula Radcliffe).
On hearing the great news, Eriksson told TheFA.com: "It is a special honour for me to be recognised in this way, especially as this is my first year in England.
"However, this award is not just for me, it is for all of the coaching staff who have worked so well with the England team - Tord Grip, Steve McClaren, Sammy Lee, Dave Sexton, Ray Clemence and Peter Taylor, and of course the players."
Additionally, The F.A's Technical Director Howard Wilkinson will be inducted into the sports coach UK Coaching Hall of Fame, by receiving the prestigious Dyson Award.
Aside from a very successful managerial career, which saw him become the last Englishman to win the League title - with Leeds in 1992, Howard has also masterminded the much heralded club academy system, and the development programme for English football, which is now showing clear evidence of producing top players.
A delighted Wilkinson said: "I am extremely pleased to be recognised in this way, particularly given the other top level coaches who have received The Dyson Award.
"I am pleased to say that far more emphasis is now being placed on fully-qualified coaches and am confident that English football will inherit better players due to the improved coaching they receive."
FA Chief Executive Adam Crozier added: "This is tremendous news for everyone at The Football Association. Howard Wilkinson has produced a fantastic development programme for the future of football in this country, while Sven has done a marvellous job since taking over as Head Coach of the senior team."
Both Sven-Goran Eriksson and Howard Wilkinson will be attending the ceremony at the Cafe Royal.
