John Barnes, v Brazil

Friendly, 10.06.84

John Barnes against Brazil in the Maracana in 1984. Not simply because of the breathtaking beauty of the run, which took him past half a dozen bewitched Brazilians, but because throughout the trip Barnes had been subjected to racial abuse and his genius had rammed every ill-conceived slur down his antagonists’ throats.

Michael Owen v Argentina
1998 World Cup, 30.06.98

A breathtaking moment in a relentlessly exciting game that lives long in the memory.

Gary Lineker, v West Germany
World Cup Semi-Final, 04.07.90

Right-back Paul Parker looked up and delivered a perfect ball into
the box. With defenders all around him, Gary Lineker took the ball on his thigh and drilled it home left-footed. It was classic Lineker, and it was 1-1. England were on top in a World Cup Semi-Final. The feeling Lineker’s goal gave me was out of this world – the kind of football feeling that doesn’t come around very often. Sadly it didn’t last…

Bobby Charlton v Mexico
1966 World Cup, 16.07.66

The great Bobby Charlton, along with Johnny Haynes was the best ever England midfield player. His goal against Mexico at Wembley 1966 stands out. Bobby picked up the ball on the halfway line and ran 25-yards, dropping a shoulder one way and then the other before unleashing a rocket 30-yarder into the top corner. Absolutely brilliant!

Wayne Rooney, v Switzerland

European Championship, 17.06.04

After he scored it seemed as though he was running towards me! Stupid I know because he was running towards thousands of us...
