Our campaign has been gathering steam. We’ve heard from Shearer and Barnes – now we want to hear from you

Martin Tyler
Sky Sports football commentator
Geoff Hurst, v West Germany
World Cup, 30 June 1966

"As a patriot and also a football commentator it has to be Geoff Hurst’s decisive World Cup Final goal in 1966. Kenneth Wolstenholme’s line, "They think it’s all over…" is the most memorable piece of football commentary of all-time and the goal made sure we won the World Cup.

"Geoff actually wasn’t sure whether the goal had counted because there were people on the pitch – he wasn’t sure when the whistle had gone – and had to glance up at the scoreboard to make sure! Commentating on England winning the World Cup is my last unfulfilled ambition."

Peter Taylor
England Under-21 and Crystal Palace manager
Frank Lampard, v Poland
England Under-21, 26 March 1999

"My favourite goal has to be Frank Lampard scoring for England at Under-21 level when we beat Poland 5-0 at Southampton in 1999. It’s my favourite goal by a mile. The goal was the end of a 29-pass move.

"I was managing the Under-21s at the time, but even I didn’t realise quite how special Frank would turn out to be. Full credit to him for doing so well."

John Barnes
England legend and host of John Barnes Football Night
Bobby Charlton, v Mexico World Cup, 16 July 1966

"I would have to say Bobby Charlton against Mexico at the World Cup. It was a long run, he jinked one way and the other, then shot from a long way out into the corner. That was special."

Henry Winter
The Daily Telegraph
Michael Owen, v Argentina
World Cup, 30 June 1998

"For the nerve, the touch, the occasion, the pace. Because it inflicted humiliation on a very good defence, and because it was scored by one of football’s good guys."

Alan Shearer
England legend and Match of the Day pundit
Himself, v Holland, European Championship, 18 June 1996

"The atmosphere was one of the best that I’ve played in at an England game and to beat Holland 4-1 was a great achievement in itself. I think the goal, right from the build up to it and the football that we played – when Teddy laid it on to me and how many people were involved in the build up to the goal – I just think it was an excellent goal all round.

"Holland were renowned for playing good football but that was the goal of the game, particularly with all the passing involved. I was lucky enough to score it but I thought the build-up was great."
