And Manager delighted with Defoe and Rooney.

England Manager Fabio Capello spoke of his joy at seeing strike duo Jermain Defoe and Wayne Rooney hit all the right notes at Wembley on Friday night.

Whilst it was Defoe who took the match ball home after scoring a hat-trick, Rooney could take great credit having provided the three passes for each of those goals.

“Rooney and Defoe are two fantastic players,” said Capello.

“Three goals from Defoe and the passes from Rooney. They are good technically and their movement without the ball is good. I'm happy."

Capello also revealed that his thoughts have never been away from preparing his side for this game, despite continuing criticism of his management since the World Cup.

And he was rewarded with a good performance from his team, who made a winning start to their qualifying campaign ahead of next Tuesday’s game with Switzerland.

“I'm focused on the game, not the critics,” added Capello.

“I thought we were really good tonight. The movement, the pressing and the way we moved the ball very quickly.

“I'm really happy because in the last interview, I said the players trained well and the spirit was good.”
