Terry: 'No excuses for defeat '

Saturday, 10 October, 2009

John Terry says that England can have no complaints about defeat in Dnipro.

John Terry has refused to blame England’s defeat against the Ukraine on flares thrown onto the pitch by home fans.

At one stage in the first-half referee Damor Skomina threatened to halt the game if the problem continued but the England Captain insists it did not affect the performance of his defence.

“People have spoken about the flares but that’s not an excuse. We’ve experienced that before in the Champions League and it’s a case of the referee stopping the game. To be fair their stewards and fire fighters did a good job putting them out.

“We can’t used that as an excuse and to be honest the first-half was a little bit disappointing. We weren’t at it from the start. We said we needed to match them and we didn’t do that. Going down to ten men they dominated. But I’m pleased with the way the second half went and we gave it a right go."
