England captain is full of confidence ahead of World Cup qualifying double-header

England captain Steven Gerrard admits he would love the Three Lions to put on a show for the fans when they face San Marino on Friday night.

Roy Hodgson's side are looking to close the gap on Montenegro and will be hoping for the perfect confidence boost ahead of the showdown game with the group leaders next Tuesday.

Gerrard says the players have looked exceptional in training this week and aim to record six points over the next two games and move a step closer to reaching the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Gerrard said: "It will be ideal to put on a show for the fans back home and those who come out here to watch us.

"The three points are the most important thing. We get the same out of this game like we do on Tuesday night.

"Hopefully on Wednesday morning we will be in the driving seat in this group."

"If we take six points we can go away and enjoy the summer as far as England games are concerned," Gerrard continued. "We then come back next season and are hopefully ready to win the group.

"Hopefully the spirit is still there. We have had a fantastic week training and we are all looking forward to the game. I am not lacking confidence or belief coming off the Brazil result.

He added: "We don't look at the game as an easy game. We respect the opposition and know they will make it difficult for us. We need to play close to our top level. We prepare hard for this game."
