England midfielder struck against Stoke to edge nearer to Chelsea scoring record

England midfielder Frank Lampard moved a step closer to becoming Chelsea’s record goalscorer after converting a penalty during his side’s 4-0 romp at Stoke City.

Two own goals from the unfortunate Jonathan Walters gave Chelsea the lead before Lampard put the tie beyond Stoke’s reach to score his 194th goal for the club. The 34-year-old is now just eight goals behind club legend Bobby Tambling.

Belgium international Eden Hazard struck a fine fourth as the Blues leapfrogged London rivals Tottenham into third spot.

Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez also handed starts to Ryan Bertrand and Ashley Cole, while England centre-back Gary Cahill missed out as he was at the birth of his child.

Benitez said: “Cahill’s wife had a baby, and the baby is fine. He is happy, she is happy – that is the main thing! And we are happy too.”

Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson was in the stands at Loftus Road to take in the goalless clash between QPR and Tottenham.

Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton played in opposite full-back positions, on either side of the Spurs defence, and did well to help Andre Villas-Boas's team keep a clean sheet. 

Aaron Lennon worked hard for Tottenham but was substituted in the second half as they searched for a winner. 

Jermain Defoe was denied a wonder-goal inside five minutes when he cut inside the Rangers defence and smashed an effort toward the top-left corner, only for Julio Cesar to produce an amazing save.

Scott Parker was brought on after 25 minutes when midfield team-mate Sandro was injured and, as usual, the England anchorman did not disappoint.

QPR’s most impressive England candidate was Shaun Wright-Phillips, still riding on the crest of a wave following his recent winner against Chelsea, who was a constant threat to Spurs’ defence.

England U17 defender Luke Shaw celebrated committing his long-term future to Southampton by featuring in their 1-0 win against Aston Villa.

A Rickie Lambert penalty, which was scored after Jay Rodriguez went down under pressure from Enda Stevens, proved be the only goal of the game.

England Under-21s star Nathaniel Clyne also lined up alongside Shaw in manager Nigel Adkins’ backline.

The Three Lions trio of Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka and Leon Osman failed to help ignite Everton on Saturday as the Merseysiders were held to a 0-0 draw by Swansea City.
