West Brom will remember the former England striker who passed away recently

West Bromwich Albion will remember a former England forward at their Premier League game against Aston Villa at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

Derek Kevan, who scored 173 goals for the Baggies in 291 matches and was capped 14 times for England, passed away a few days ago at the age of 77.

A minute's silence will be held before kick-off.

Kevan had just under ten successful years at West Bromwich and scored four goals as Albion reached The FA Cup Semi-Finals in 1957, losing to Midlands rivals Aston Villa in a replay.

He also played League football for Bradford Park Avenue, Chelsea, Manchester City, Crystal Palace, Peterborough United, Luton Town and Stockport County.

He made his England debut against Scotland before a 97,000 crowd at Wembley in 1957, scoring England’s first goal in a 2-1 win.

A big, powerful striker, he kept Bobby Smith and Brian Clough out of the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and notched two goals in the tournament – against USSR and Austria.

He didn’t manage a goal in his last international, against the Mexicans at Wembley in 1961, but did contribute to an 8-0 victory.

He joined Albion’s commercial office in the 1980s.
