Leighton Baines and Ashley Young reflect on big win in San Marino
Leighton Baines hailed England’s “professional’ performance after they hit eight past San Marino on Friday night.
With a tough trip to Group H leaders Montenegro on Tuesday night, it was important for England to put on a show in San Marino as they continue their World Cup qualifying campaign.
And they did just that, with five first-half goals and three in the second at the Stadio Olimpico in Serravalle.
The Everton left-back said: “I thought it was a professional job. We got a goal early on which helps. After that we got a few more and the game was won really at half time.”
On Manager Roy Hodgson’s half-time team talk, the 28-year-old added: “It was just a matter of same again really.
“We came out and got another goal through Wayne’s free-kick. The game was won so it was just about being professional in the second half.”
Ashley Young hit the goal of the night with a 25-yard rocket which crashed in off the underside of the bar to make it 4-0 to England just before half-time.
And the Manchester United star added: “I couldn’t believe the goal myself to be honest but I’ll definitely take one like that.
"I’ve been due a goal but it’s been coming. It’s nice to get on the score-sheet but the result was the main thing.
“I wanted to well in today’s game and now it’s down to the manager to pick the team for Tuesday.
“We had to do a professional job today, and get the win. We look forward to Tuesday’s game now.”
