Sir Trevor Brooking picks his England Under-21s and Women's Player of the Year for 2012

Sir Trevor Brooking has made his picks for England Player Of The Year for both the Women and Under-21s in 2012.

The FA’s Director Of Football Development had picked out Steven Gerrard as his England nomination on Christmas Day.

And now as a new year commences, Brooking has made his other choices with defender Craig Dawson and forward Eni Aluko getting the nod for the Under-21s and Women’s side respectively.

He said: “The one who has been so assured in every game that he’s played for the Under-21s has been Craig Dawson.

“He’s upheld his position through the qualifying campaign and into the Play-Offs.

“Jack Butland is another one who came close.”

Hope Powell’s Women have also come through a successful qualifying campaign to secure their place in next summer’s European Championship Finals in Sweden.

And Aluko’s form during the campaign sees her get Brooking’s vote, just ahead of England team-mate and Team GB star Steph Houghton.

“The one player who has really well this year is Eni,” added Brooking.

“She has been our best forward in most of the qualifying games that I’ve seen.

“In the game against Netherlands in Manchester, she was dangerous and proved the difference in a game we had to win.

Steph Houghton has been a bit of a newcomer this year and did really well for Team GB too, so she would come close for me.”

Steven Gerrard, along with Ashley Cole, Joe Hart, Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck are all in the hunt this year and it's up to you which star will claim the 2012 England Player of the Year award at the inaugural FA England Awards in association with Vauxhall at St. George's Park on Sunday 3 February 2013.
