Talking at the press conference at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Hodgson, who will remain West Brom manager until the end of the season, said: "It is a very proud day for me and I am very happy man to be offered the chance to manage my country.
"I am looking forward to the job and everyone knows it is not an easy one. I am also hoping that everyone from the fans to the players will get behind the team.
"It is the team that counts. I will do my very best to ensure the team is well prepared for the task that lies ahead. I am grateful for the chance to be the manager of England I am a looking forward to it.
"It is going to be difficult but hopefully I have got a lot of time on my hands to think about it and make the decisions I think are necessary.
"The players are well known to me. I will speak to as many players as I can and do as much research as I can."
