It was a busy day in the Premier League for England aces on Sunday

England's Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young helped orchestrate Manchester United's 3-2 victory over title rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as manager Sir Alex Ferguson altered his tactics.

United had used a 'diamond' system in midfield, with no wingers, during a midweek Champions League match against Braga and in last weekend's victory over Stoke City.

But against Chelsea, the United manager used Young and Antonio Valencia in wider roles with Rooney playing deeper and England team-mate Michael Carrick also in midfield.

And it worked too because United went 2-0 ahead in west London through a David Luiz own goal and a strike from Robin van Persie.

Chelsea fired back to level at 2-2 through goals from Juan Mata and Ramires, but then Young was involved in one of the game's key moments as he was clipped by Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic when racing through on goal.

Ivanovic was sent off - and was soon joined on the sidelines by Fernando Torres, who was given a second yellow card of the afternoon for simulation.

United, who also featured Rio Ferdinand at the heart of their defence, won the game through a 75th strike by Javier Hernandez - who was brought on in the second half by Ferguson as he once again shuffled tactics with Chelsea down in numbers.

The Blues were without injured Frank Lampard, but fielded Ashley Cole from the start and brought on Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge late in the game.

Down at St Mary's on the south coast, England's Jermain Defoe and Aaron Lennon were both in excellent form as Tottenham ground out a tense 2-1 win at Southampton.

The pair combined for what proved to be the winner, when Spurs went 2-0 up in the 39th minute, with their slick combination finished off by Clint Dempsey.

England right-back Kyle Walker was also in action for the visitors and impressed in defence and attack down the flank.

Adam Lallana was again Southampton’s creative spark and he almost inspired them to an unlikely point, after they trailed 2-0 at the interval.

But despite a brilliant midfield display from him in the second half, it was not enough to draw Southampton level. And the 66th-minute strike from Jay Rodriguez, a former Under-21 international and his first Premier League goal since his move from Burnley in the summer, proved little more than a consolation.

At Goodison Park, England's Leighton Baines scored an unfortunate own goal for Everton against Liverpool but then helped his team, also including Phil Jagielka, come back to draw the game 2-2.

Liverpool, captained by Steven Gerrard and also featuring Raheem Sterling, went 2-0 up through Luis Suarez but were pegged back by goals from Leon Osman and Steven Naismith.

Elsewhere, England Under-21 capped Sammy Ameobi had a huge impact as a substitute for Newcastle against West Brom.

The striker hit a hopeful shot in injury time that struck teammate Papiss Cisse on the back - and ended up in the net for a dramatic 2-1 victory. It was Cisse's first goal of the season and a huge blow for West Brom, who felt they deserved at least a point from the game.

What Do You Think?

  • Liverpool's third goal not mentioned! Respect the referee but the referee does not respect anybody!By YNWA96 (7 months ago)
  • There is no mention in this report of the most influential man on the pitch who turned this game around. Clattenburg. If this man referees a premiership game again after this performance, the FA must surely lose all credibility. By Stamford99 (7 months ago)
  • When will the Fa red card referee and lines persons for bring the game into disrespect. By mangers players and media. Mr clutterberg and co did that today at Chelsea. Potential dangerous situation totally ignored when Manchester Utd players went over to Chelsea fans when scoring the 3rd goal because of there action a steward was injured.
