Frank Lampard and Kieran Gibbs both limp out of their games on Saturday

There were injury worries for England on Saturday afternoon as both Frank Lampard and Kieran Gibbs limped out of Premier League games for Chelsea and Arsenal.

Lampard was forced off in the Blues' win over Norwich at Stamford Bridge. He was withdrawn midway through the second half after starting and scoring in a 4-1 victory.

The 34-year-old was named in England's squad for their World Cup qualifying double-header against San Marino and Poland but Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo was not sure after today's game whether he would be fit.

"We'll have to assess him tomorrow and then see," Di Matteo said.

"He felt a little bit of a problem behind his knee, so for precaution, we took him off."

Roy Hodgson may also find himself without Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs for the qualifiers after the full-back limped from the pitch during his side's 3-1 win over West Ham.

Gibbs looked in some discomfort and his manager Arsene Wenger suggested international duty may be beyond him. 

"He has a thigh problem just above his knee, I think he will be very doubtful for England.," said Wenger after the game. 

However, Wenger did praise Theo Walcott’s deadly finishing ability after the Three Lions ace came off the bench to score in their victory at Upton Park.

With the score level at 1-1, Walcott was introduced as substitute shortly after the hour mark and the quicksilver forward put his side in front just 16 minutes later to propel the north Londoners to victory.

The 23-year-old latched on to Olivier Giroud’s pass and raced clear of the defence before coolly slotting the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen to send the travelling fans into raptures.

Speaking about Walcott’s finishing ability, Wenger said: “Yes, he has that in him. I said that many times. But before, two or three years ago, when he got in front of the keeper you were not always sure he would finish well. Now you’re nearly convinced he will score.”

There was some good news for Hodgson, though, with fit-again striker Andy Carroll managing a full 90 minutes for the Hammers.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini handed starts to four England internationals as he saw his side record a classy 3-0 victory against Sunderland.

Fresh from his heroics against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night, goalkeeper Joe Hart kept his first clean sheet of the season, aided by defender Joleon Lescott.

Midfielder James Milner notched his side’s third late on, sending a vicious free-kick past Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, while Gareth Barry and Jack Rodwell also featured.

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson endured an unhappy return to the Etihad Stadium, while Under-21s star Danny Rose also suffered a difficult afternoon.

Everton left-back Leighton Baines kept his cool late on to salvage a point for the Merseysiders at Wigan.

With the home side leading with just four minutes left, Baines sent an emphatic penalty past goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi to continue Everton’s impressive start to the Premier League campaign. Baines also lined up alongside fellow England defender Phil Jagielka.
