England duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling wary of Premier League complacency

England duo Phil Jones and Chris Smalling hope the pain of last season’s Premier League outcome can help Manchester United this campaign.

The pair were both part of the United squad which missed out on the title to rivals Manchester City on the final day of the season.

And Jones, who started his first league game of the season on Saturday, is hoping that the six point lead which United have formed will give them momentum for the rest of the season.

He said: "We are in a fantastic position, exactly where you would want to be at this stage.

"But last season was my first at United and I experienced something I had never experienced before.

"I learned that in this league, it is never, ever over."

Despite Saturday's 3-1 victory over Sunderland, Smalling feels that United still have some fine-tuning to do.

The defender was not happy with the way in which the Reds conceded a goal to former United striker and England squad-mate Fraizer Campbell.

"There was a bit of carelessness, which is disappointing because we wanted to keep a clean sheet," he admitted.

"Our record with them [Sunderland] has not been great and it would have been nice to get one going into the Christmas period."
