FA Chairman congratulates former England captain on his latest career success

David Bernstein has paid tribute to David Beckham following the latest chapter in the former England captain's illustrious career.

The midfielder, who has won 115 caps for England, ended his spell with LA Galaxy by winning the MLS Cup earlier this month.

And The FA Chairman is keen to see where the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star’s career will take him next.

Bernstein said: "He is an asset that English football should treasure and I hope at some stage that perhaps The FA and David Beckham can get close together.

“That might be a little bit down the road but he is a fine figure in British football and he has become a unique figure.

"He is probably the most recognisable sports figure in the world I suspect.

“I’m not mad about the word 'brand', but he’s a real footballing figure, a fine player and sportsman.

“He’s someone who has projected themselves and done wonderfully well for us in so many ways.

“So I’d like to congratulate him on what he’s done and look forward to the next stage in his career."

Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Joe Hart, Glen Johnson and Danny Welbeck are all in the hunt for the England Player of the Year Award and it's up to you which star wins.

Place your vote here before the closing date of 13 January 2013. You can also vote for the England Men's Under-21s and Women's Senior Players of the Year, too.

What Do You Think?

  • David Beckham symbolizes everything that has been wrong with the English game in the last 15 years. He was an average player turned world-class by a media circus. You struggle to picture him being where he is if he had a face of Wayne Rooney. It's a complete hoax that he only cares about playing football for football's sake, why do you think he moved from Manchester United, then best team in the world, MONEY! And the fact he got on Fergie's nerves, and if you bugged Fergie, you've seriously screwed up. Why do you think he then left the then best team in the world Real Madrid to go to a pathetic, money happy, under-crowded hoax league in America? MONEY! The league is awful, PIERS MORGAN was a pundit, Thierry Henry's ghost is the best player, there's no relegation and it's like every other American sport. Over-advertised and over-inflated. I wish he didn't score that free-kick against Greece (remember he missed about infinity minus 2 before hand) so that the public could actually see what he is!By anonymous (6 months ago)

  • When I saw this I had to check the date to see if it was April 1st I can believe that this is true Beckham is the most over hyped money grabbing self-glorifying average footballer who has ever walked the planet It’s an absolute disgrace how the fa pander to this man who has far too many England caps and it is a blessing that he never managed to overall Peter Shilton despite the fa falling over backwards to give him caps Compared to the late great Bobby Moore who earned every cap by starting all his games this character is a fraudBy ManCunian56 (6 months ago)
