Ashley Young started 2011 in the same fashion as he finished 2010. With everything going through him at club Aston Villa, it would only be a matter of time before his excellence was transferred to the international scene.

England’s first game of 2011 came in February, playing an away friendly in Denmark. Manager Fabio Capello brought on the nimble-footed winger with the score at 1-1. Young went on to score the winner and maintain the momentum for the rest of the year.

Now a consistent member of the England squad, Young again came off the bench to save his country against Switzerland in June. With the score 2-1 to the visitors at half-time, the 25-year-old volleyed from the edge of his box to earn England a draw from the game.

Following a summer move to Premier League Champions Manchester United, Young looked more likely to cement his place in England’s starting XI. This was more than evident when he was the only scorer of the game against Wales, and scored the first goal away in Montenegro, as well as setting up the second for Darren Bent.

The two goals were enough to secure England’s qualification to the European Championships in Ukraine and Poland in 2012 and maybe book his seat on the plane.
