2010 proved to be a rollercoaster year for Stephen Warnock. Having worked his way into Fabio Capello’s England squad at the start of the year, he was then overlooked in favour of Everton’s Leighton Baines for the left-back berth when regular Ashley Cole was sidelined through injury.

However, despite not featuring in any of England’s World Cup build-up games, it was Warnock who ended up claiming a place in Capello’s 23-man squad – ahead of Baines – as cover for the returning Cole.

The tough tackling defender was not used during the South Africa tournament but continued good form for Aston Villa in the new season saw him finally get to pull on the Three Lions against France in November, coming on for Kieran Gibbs.
