Had it not been for injury, Phil Jagielka may well have been pushing for a place in Fabio Capello’s World Cup squad last year.

As it was, the Everton centre-back missed out on the tournament but proceeded to do his best to make up for the disappointment in the second half of 2010, appearing in four of England’s five post-tournament fixtures.

The commanding defender was described by the England Manager as a “driver” and “leader” on the pitch and he put those attributes to good use as he partnered John Terry, Michael Dawson, Gary Cahill and Jolean Lescott in the heart of the Three Lions’ defence in the first three internationals of the 2010-11 season – all of which ended in victory.

He was forced to withdraw from the squad that faced Montenegro due to injury but he was back in the international fold for the friendly against France in November and will hope to continue his run of international appearances in 2011.
