It is widely accepted that had Ledley King not been so unlucky with injuries, he would have acquired far more than the 21 England caps he currently possesses.
However, as the 2010 World Cup approached, the Spurs centre-half was enjoying a prolonged period of fitness and form that saw him force his way into Fabio Capello’s thoughts. The England Manager selected him to appear in the Three Lions’ final home friendly, against Mexico, ahead of the South Africa Finals and – after nearly three years out of the national team – he repaid that faith by scoring the opener as England went on to win 3-1.
That performance proved enough to see King secure his place on the plane to South Africa and he was immediately thrown into the action, lining up alongside John Terry in the opening Group game against USA.
Sadly, King’s old injury demons returned to haunt him during the match and he was forced off at half-time with a groin problem that was to signal the premature end of his tournament.
