While 2010 will ultimately be seen as a disappointment for England, there are plenty of reasons for Jermain Defoe to reflect with at least a little individual pride following the contribution he made to his country's cause.

Always a prolific goalscorer at club level, Defoe took it on to the biggest stage as he fulfilled a lifelong dream, not just playing at a World Cup but scoring at one. And it could not have been a more crucial goal as it ensured England qualified from the group stage with a narrow 1-0 victory over Slovenia.

Prior to that game Defoe had looked on from the bench as England drew with USA and Algeria, but the Tottenham striker got his chance in the third group game from the start and he got on the end of a James Milner cross to give England the lead. There was little that Defoe could do as England were overrun by Germany in the Second Round, but in his first start after the tournament in South Africa, Defoe made another landmark.

The first competitive game after the World Cup was a Euro 2012 qualifier with Bulgaria at Wembley, and Defoe led England to an emphatic 4-0 win, and he grabbed his first ever hat-trick for his country.

Sadly injury in the next match away to Switzerland would end his involvement for England in 2010, but in a year of few highlights Defoe was undoubtedly one shining star for his offering on the biggest stage.
