Highs and lows

England have won 38 matches in February.

England  will play their 62nd February international in Copenhagen tonight. The previous 61 have produced 38 wins, 9 draws and 14 defeats.

As you would expect there have been high points and low points.

England’s biggest ever margin of victory, 13-0, was achieved against Ireland in Belfast on 18 February 1882. A 13-2 win against the same opposition at Sunderland’s Roker Park on the same day in 1899 wasn’t too shabby either.

Nobby Stiles’ close-range goal beat West Germany in the World Cup year of 1966 (23 February). England won 5-0 at Hampden Park to spoil Scotland’s centenary celebrations in 1973 (14 February). Gary Lineker scored all four goals as Spain were swamped 4-2 in Madrid in 1987 (18 February). Alan Shearer and Lineker were on target as England won 2-0 to end France’s long unbeaten record in 1992 (19 February).

Sven-Goran Eriksson’s first match in charge finished 3-0 to England at Villa Park against the Spanish (28 February) and Fabio Capello’s reign began with a 2-1 win over Switzerland in a Wembley friendly (6 February).

Those 14 reversals in February include France 5 England 2 in 1963 (Alf Ramsey’s first match on the 27th), England 0 Holland 2 in 1977 (the Dutch inspired by Cruyff on the 9th), England 0 Italy 1 in 1997 (a World Cup qualifier on the 12th), England 0 Chile 2 in 1998 (Michael Owen’s debut on the 11th) and England 1 Australia 3 in 2003 (Wayne Rooney’s debut on the 12th).

England have never met Denmark in February before.
