Route to the finalsSouth Africa 2010 will be the USA’s sixth consecutive appearance in the World Cup finals.
Once again they proved to be the powerhouses of the CONCACAF zone, brushing aside Barbados in the Second Round and comfortably topping Group 1 in the Third Round, despite a surprise defeat to Trinidad and Tobago.
By the Fourth Round teams hoping to qualify had been whittled down to six and once again the USA came out on top, with six wins, two draws and two losses, pushing Mexico and Honduras into the other automatic qualifying places.
ManagerBob Bradley took over the national squad from Bruce Arena in December 2006, having been originally appointed coach on a caretaker basis.
A run of ten games unbeaten was enough to prompt a permanent placement and since then Bradley has achieved notable success.
In 2007 he led his charges to success in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and in 2009 he took them to the Final of the FIFA Confederations Cup, beating European Champions Spain 2-0 in the semi-finals.
Player watch With 121 caps and 42 goals to his name, Landon Donovan has been the spearhead of the US team for almost a decade and yet the attacking midfielder is still only 28.
Playing in his third World Cup this summer, Donovan is certain to be one of the Americans’ key threats and after a successful loan period in the Premier League with Everton earlier this year, few will doubt his ability to once again shine at the highest level.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard, defender Jonathan Spector and midfielder Clint Dempsey are also recognised Premiership names and will be hoping to play a significant role in South Africa.
