Route to the finals
In what appeared to be one of the toughest qualifying groups in Europe, Serbia provided a huge shock when they topped Group 7 ahead of France, Austria and Romania.

Despite defeat to Les Bleus in only their second qualifier, the White Eagles went on to win five of their next six ties, leaving themselves needing only three points from their final two games to guarantee their place in South Africa.

They achieved it in style, thumping Romania 5-0 in Belgrade in the penultimate match and leaving France to take second place and face the play-offs.

Manager
Radomir Antic had been out of football for four years until he was appointed as Serbia Manager in 2008.

Having had spells in charge of Atletico Madrid – where he won a La Liga/Copa del Rey double – Real Madrid and Real Oviedo, however, his quality was undeniable and despite his absence from the frontline he has proved a commanding figure at the helm of the White Eagles.

Player watch
Serbia boast two of the Premier League’s most powerful and committed defenders in Manchester United’s Nemanja Vidic and Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

The two provide solid foundations on which the team is built, demonstrated throughout qualifying as they conceded only eight goals during their campaign.

Captain Dejan Stankovic is the country’s second most capped player and will also provide a threat from midfield.
