  • England v Serbia & Montenegro

England had 21 players and four captains on this day.

England played an extraordinary friendly fixture at Leicester City’s Walkers Stadium on this day in 2003. Sven’s side won 2-1 against Serbia & Montenegro and used 21 different players. They also had four different captains!

England had a more crucial EURO 2004 Qualifier against Slovakia coming up in eight days’ time and their starting line-up for the friendly was: James, Mills, Cole A., Gerrard, Upson, Southgate, Lampard, Scholes, Heskey, Owen and Neville P.

The ten substitutes who came on were: Carragher, Bridge, Hargreaves, Barry, Terry, Cole J., Jenas, Vassell, Rooney and Beattie. John Terry was winning his first cap and Joe Cole’s brilliant free-kick eight minutes from time won the match.

Steven Gerrard had scored England’s opener on 34 minutes, converting Michael Owen’s slide-rule pass, before Jestrovic climbed impressively to head home from Vukic’s corner on the stroke of half-time.

Owen started as captain and the armband was subsequently picked up by Emile Heskey, Phil Neville and Jamie Carragher.
