The 1982 World Cup welcomes more nations.
Spain ’82 proved to be a serious fiesta of football. The number of nations in the tournament rose from 16 to 24 and as a result FIFA had yet another tinker with the finals format – tinkering that would ultimately see England leave the competition despite not losing a match.
It would be the last time in the tournament’s history that a Second Round Group Stage would be implemented but it was too late for England, who after three wins and two draws were left to watch Italy lift the trophy for a third time.
