The day Barnes 'out-Braziled' Brazil.
When it comes to opening your account for your country, most players would be happy with a tap-in, but not England’s John Barnes.
Barnes was playing in his tenth international in 1984 and faced Brazil on their home patch, the Maracana, and a sterner test you’d be hard pushed to find. But the Liverpool legend was unfazed and seemingly channelled the ghosts of Brazilian greats as he produced one of the finest goals scored by a player wearing the Three Lions.
England won the game 2-0 but the performance would go down as the day Barnes ‘out-Braziled’ Brazil.
He went on to represent his country
79 times, including five appearances at England's 1990 World Cup campaign, contributing 11 goals in total.
