Will there be goals galore at South Africa 2010?

Although the 1930 and ’34 World Cups only produced 70 goals each – the lowest number of goals in any World Cup – the average goals per match remain some of the highest in the tournament’s history, with 3.9 and 4.1 goals respectively.

With increased tactical nous, heightened physical prowess and the fact “there are no easy international games anymore”, it is unlikely we’ll ever see such a goal ratio again but you can bet the organisers (and spectators) of South Africa 2010 would love to see a couple of 6-1 semi-final results, just like in 1930.
