England and the USA recreate a classic World Cup encounter.

There’s no point dredging up the past but you can be sure that when England run out against the USA in the opening game of Group C at South Africa 2010, there will be more than a few mentions of the same fixture 60 years earlier.

It was at the 1950 World Cup – England’s debut in the competition – that these two teams met for the very first time and the 1-0 defeat that the Americans inflicted would go down as one of the biggest upsets of all time.

The loss contributed to Walter Winterbottom’s side being knocked out of the competition, a fate Fabio Capello’s men will be eager to avoid.
