The former Chelsea striker had enjoyed a good spell in the West Ham United front line, scoring ten-goals during the first half of the 2008-09 campaign, which earned him his England debut for their trip to take on the European Champions Spain.
Cole appeared from the bench in Seville to add his first senior cap to the 19 he'd won at Under-21 level. And it wasn't to be his last outing as his was a used substitute in five more games during 2009, which included three World Cup Qualifiers, while being named in all but one of Fabio Capello's squads during the year.
His second appearance ended in disappointment. After replacing the injured Emile Heskey 15 minutes into the Wembley friendly with Slovakia, Cole himself limped off with a groin problem 20 minutes later.
In his next match though, away in Holland in August, Cole almost made up for it showing just what he can do with a tremendous trap from a Frank Lampard through ball, before twisting defending Ooijer inside and out and volleying against the stanchion behind the goal from 20 yards out. Many of the travelling England supporters thought it was a second goal as it crashed back off the advertising hoarding and rippled the net.
Although he's yet to make his first start, or score his first goal, the Croydon-born forward has impressed for the Three Lions, showing strength, skill and confidence in advanced positions, providing the manager with another attacking option.
