Michael Carrick added five caps to his England tally in 2009, starting two of the matches.
In February England travelled to Seville to take on Spain and Carrick appeared alongside Gareth Barry in the heart of the Three Lions midfield. However, Spain proved too hot to handle as a goal in each half gave the European Champions a 2-0 victory.
Carrick then came off the bench in England’s second match of the year, a 4-0 friendly defeat of Slovakia, with the 28-year-old having a hand in the game’s third goal – England’s 500th goal at Wembley Stadium.
He picked up the ball in the 82nd minute deep inside Slovakia’s half and fed Lampard who was bursting into the visitors’ box. The Chelsea man took the ball in his stride before firing across Stefan Senecky.
Carrick also appeared from the bench to earn his next two caps, against Holland and Slovenia, before being named in the starting eleven against Ukraine in October. A 5-1 win over Croatia a month earlier had already assured Fabio Capello’s side of World Cup qualification so a 1-0 defeat in Dnipro did not harm their position in Group Six.
