LION OF THE WEEKEND - JAMES BEATTIE

"Our strikers were the difference" - Gordon Strachan

"Wonderful, curling second goal" - News of the World

"The kind of player I like to be alongside" - Kevin Phillips

James Beattie has perfect sense of timing.

In front of his England manager Sven Goran Eriksson, the 25-year-old capped a perfect centre-forward's performance with two great goals in a 3-1 Southampton victory.

Beattie has now scored 41 times in his last 72 Premiership games and his latest double ultimately cost beaten Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle his job, with the former England manager sacked on Sunday night.

Beattie offered the whole range of his skills alongside new strike partner Kevin Phillips.

The opener after a couple of minutes was all about his power in the air, meeting Matt Oakley's corner with a thumping header.

His second showed what he can do on the ground - hitting a 25-yard free-kick that David Beckham would have been proud of.

Beattie started England's last game against Liechtenstein and after finishing third in last season's Golden Boot, he is now blazing a trail at the top of the scoring charts with six goals already.

"James is the kind of player I like to play alongside," said Phillips.

"It has been well documented what Niall Quinn and I did at Sunderland. There are similarities with James although he is obviously quicker and has a better eye for goal than Niall did."
