Manchester United pair Rio Ferdinand and Nicky Butt have been ruled out of England's Euro 2004 match at Old Trafford on Wednesday...

The Manchester United man missed the trip to Macedonia of Sunday suffering from a kidney problem, but it was hoped that he would make it back in time for the visit of Liechtenstein. However, he left the England training base earlier today and will not play the final home game of England's Group 7 qualification programme.

Adrian Bevington, The FA's Head of Media Relations, told TheFA.com: "After discussions with Team doctor Leif Svard and the rest of the medical team, it was decided that he should return home, giving him longer to recover his kidney problem."

He also added that Ferdinand's United team mate Nicky Butt has been ruled out: "Nicky Butt will also miss the game with an ankle injury."
