Emile Heskey has failed in his race to be fit for tonight's EURO 2004

Emile Heskey has failed in his race to be fit for tonight's EURO 2004 qualifier against Macedonia.

The front man, who earned universal praise for his outstanding performance against Slovakia on Saturday, picked up a groin injury in training yesterday and has since been working with the medics and masseurs in a bid for fitness.

FA spokesman Paul Newman explained "Unfortunately, Emile's condition hasn't improved sufficiently for him to be available for the game tonight. we've been monitoring the situation all morning, working round the clock to help his recovery, but he's still not comfortable. He will return to Liverpool for treatment from his Club."

Losing Emile is a big blow but, as ever, Sven does have other options. Leeds United's Alan Smith now looks to be a strong contender to fill the number 9 shirt after an awesome goalscoring display against Portugal at Villa Park.
