Blake's heaven

Noel Blake's Young Lions finish Euro group with perfect record.

England 2-0 Slovakia
UEFA European U19 Championship
First Qualifying Round
2pm, Wednesday 14 October
Lendava, Slovenia

Noel Blake's England U19 team finished their group stage with a flourish on Wednesday afternoon, with a 2-0 win over Slovakia sealing top spot and a 100 per cent record.

The Young Lions had already qualified for the next stage of the competition with a game in hand after winning their first two games against Finland and Slovenia, but this victory and topping the group now means that England will be seeded for the draw of the Elite Qualifying Round.

That will take place next year, and the team who finish top of their Elite Round group will progress to the European Championship Finals in France during the summer.

Wednesday's game was a tight affair to begin with and after a goal-less first half, it was Tottenham Hotspur's Ryan Mason who gave England the lead in the 64th minute.

It was a lead they held onto, before Chelsea midfielder Jacob Mellis added a second goal in added time, his third in successive games, to secure the win and progress to the Elite Round.
