Stuart Pearce

One of England's greatest full-backs, Stuart Pearce was capped 78 times by five different England managers and scored five goals.

At club level he started with non-League Wealdstone and went on to play with great distinction at the top level for Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Manchester City.

As first-choice left-back he helped England to reach the semi-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy and 1996 European Championship memorably hosted by England. He was also an ever-present in the 1992 European Championship in Sweden. He won the League Cup twice with Forest, in 1989 and 1990, and played in FA Cup Finals for both Forest and Newcastle. He scored with one of his trademark free-kicks to give Forest the lead in the '91 Final.

After retiring as a player in 2002 he became a coach at Manchester City under Kevin Keegan and three years later was appointed the club's manager. In February 2007, while still at City, he became part-time manager to the England Under-21 team. He took them to the UEFA Championship semi-finals in Holland in June of that year, when they only lost to their Dutch hosts on penalties, and was made full-time manager by The FA in the following month.

The England Under-21s have qualified for this year's UEFA Championship Finals in Sweden and Pearce remained unbeaten in his first 22 matches in charge. In January 2008 his role in the England set-up was extended when Fabio Capello made him a coach with the senior team.
