TheFA.com camera was with the '66 squad from Downing Street to Wembley.
Eleven members of England’s 1966 World Cup winning squad and representatives of the Manager, trainer and physio were all presented with their medals at Downing Street on Wednesday before receiving at heroes’ welcome at Wembley and TheFA,com camera was with them all day to capture the occasion.
Only the first eleven received winner’s medals when England beat West Germany in 1966, but a new FIFA directive meant that the remainder of the squad plus the coaching staff were now eligible for a medal.
So the eleven players who made up the England squad behind the first eleven were all in attendance and included Terry Paine and George Eastham who were flown over from their homes in South Africa by The Football Association.
Speaking about the occasion, striker Jimmy Greaves said: "It's a pleasant day to get the medal because it's something I never thought I would get.
"The thing about the squad was that it was united by a common purpose and we believed that we could win the World Cup.
"We had a united goal and all 22 players took that on.”
John Connelly added: "You felt that you played a part in the team, even if you didn't play in the game.
"I didn't play in the Final unfortunately, I played in the first game, so I got it the wrong way around with the first one rather than the last one!
"But we had a good team spirit throughout the squad and this medal is like the icing on the cake.”
