FA Statement

The FA today confirmed that it has protested to UEFA over the treatment of England fans by Croatian police last night in Zagreb.

FA Director of Communications Adrian Bevington said:

"We are extremely unhappy with the way the Croatian Police managed the entry of the officially-ticketed England supporters into the stadium. We informed the UEFA delegate of our concerns at the time and again after the match.

"The turnstiles were unexpectedly closed on two occasions during the build up to the game which created serious congestion. Additionally, despite our advice, the pre-entry check points were too close to the turnstiles.

"As a result, when the gates were re-opened, there was a surge forward by several hundred unofficially-ticketed England supporters towards the turnstiles. This caused the officially-ticketed fans be forced towards the police cordon.

"The reaction of the police was to baton charge many of those fans, leading to a number of well-behaved supporters being injured. We are still confirming the full details of this with the UK police who were present.

"We then had a situation where around 1,000 unofficially-ticketed fans were placed in the England section of the stadium. This was despite our continued requests during the build-up to the match that at no time should this happen.

"Over the past few years The FA has only sold tickets for away games to members of englandfans, the official England supporters club, and we ensure that they are placed in a safe environment within the stadium. Last night's events totally undermine the purpose of this system.

"We have already made UEFA aware of all of these points on behalf of England supporters. We are also collating first-hand reports from englandfans members present at the game and these will form part of our official report to UEFA."
