England trounced the Dutch on "Orange Night" at Wembley, showing a display of power and passion that left home fans high on victory.
Paul Ince was sent flying in the box on 23 minutes and Alan Shearer slammed in the spot-kick to give England an interval lead.
Early in the second periodVenables’ side had a dreamlike eleven minutes in which they scored three times.
Teddy Sheringham powered in a header from Paul Gascoigne’s corner, Shearer drove in a shot of awesome force after Sheringham had cleverly laid the ball off and the Tottenham forward grabbed his second and the fourth of the match after Van Der Sar had pushed out Darren Anderton’s effort.
The highly touted Dutch - with players of the calibre of Bergkamp, Kluivert and Seedorf - were in some disarray but they did manage a consolation goal on 77 minutes that ultimately kept them in the competition.
England had qualified for the quarter-finals of a memorable Euro 96 tournament, where they would meet Spain.
