Sven-Goran Eriksson was in Geneva to see Switzerland take on Slovenia.
Yakin the threat
By Dan Freedman. Thursday, 29 April 2004.
England coaches Sven-Goran Eriksson and Tord Grip have taken the opportunity to run the rule over two of England’s Group B opponents at this summer’s Euro 2004 Finals in Portugal.
Sven saw Switzerland edge Slovenia 2-1 in Geneva, with Fabio Celestini and Hakan Yakin on target for the home side, while Tord was in Skopje to see Ivica Klasnic score the goal that earned Croatia a 1-0 win against hosts Macedonia.
So both Switzerland and Croatia, who we will meet in Coimbra (17th June) and Lisbon (21st June) respectively in the tournament, achieved narrow victories in last night’s friendly internationals.
TheFA.com caught up with Sven after the game to see what he thought of England's prospective opponents.
"Switzerland are a good team, skilful and well organised," he told us on his way back from Geneva. "Last night against Slovenia was the first time I have seen them play since the draw and three of their attacking players caught my eye.
"They played 4-4-2 in a diamond formation, with Stephane Chapuisat of Young Boys and Alexander Frei of Rennes the front two and Stuttgart’s Hakan Yakin playing behind them.
"Chapuisat is a very experienced player, strong in the Alan Shearer mould. He is clever and holds the ball up well. Frei has a different style, very quick, which works well with Chapuisat.
"But it was Yakin who impressed me most. Technically he is very good. He is a strong passer who scores goals, proving it with his goal last night.
"It will be a tough game for us against Switzerland but I am looking forward to it."
Meanwhile, Tord, was in Skopje to see Croatia emerge victorious.
"It was a poor game but I was still impressed with some of the Croatian performances," he revealed.
"Croatia started with seven or eightof their first-choice players and played a 4-4-2 system in the first half.
"They changed to 3-5-2 at half-time, which is something they have been doing regularly.
"Even though Croatia were missing some of their best players, like Prso who plays for Monaco, they were still a threat - especially through Rapaic, who plays in Italy for Ancona.
"He plays on the left of midfield and is a good passer, with great delivery, and very good at dead-ball situations.
"Another important player for them is Igor Tudor of Juventus, who has a holding role in midfield. He is very experienced and does a good job for them."
