A dejected England team saw their dreams of winning the World Championship slip away in the last nine seconds of their Quarter Final clash with Brazil.

With the scores locked at 2-2 in the dying seconds of extra-time, the English players had their minds on penalties. The South Americans had other ideas, however, lashing home as the clock ticked towards a shoot-out.

There was only enough time for England to kick off and launch a hopeful long shot before the referee gave a cruel toot on his whistle.

The signs looked ominous when Brazil took an eighth minute lead but England responded well with the on-form Micky Chambers and Lee Wolfenden both close to restoring parity.

England needed goalkeeper Carl Richardson to pull off a fine save early in the second half to keep them within touching distance.

That stop proved crucial as with six minutes left, Dave Tweed (pictured) buried a powerful header to send the game to extra-time.

Brazil took the lead for the second time three minutes after the restart, punishing England for losing possession. The Samba Boys would have gone further ahead had it not been for substitute Tyrone Welcome who made some super saves after replacing Richardson.

Tweed gave England hope of a Semi-Final berth when he slotted home a penalty with just four minutes remaining after he was fouled in the box.

With the England management checking they had the right penalty takers on the field, Brazil grabbed a late goal to break English hearts.
