Cerebral Palsy 7-a-side World Championship
Rio de Janiero 2007
Group B: England/Wales, Brazil, Australia, South Africa
Seldom can a match have lived up to the date of 5 November. Thrilling tricks snd sparkling skills , rocket shots and cracking goals lit up this game as both teams attacked from the outset.
Fourth seeds Brazil drew first blood as early as the sixth minute, with a blazing free kick into the angle of Raynes goal. Undeterred by this early setback England stuck to their game plan by playing at a high tempo, and were rewarded with the goal of the match; Ellis making a pacy run down the left, delivered the perfect cross for Wayne Ward to flick the ball in at the near post.
As half time beckoned England looked good for the draw, but two Brazilian strikes in two minutes gave the score line a distorted complexion. Roused by paul harrisons team talk England began the second period in bullish manner and their approach bore instant fruit with a towering downward header from defensive colossus Andy Taylor.
Clearly rattled, Brazil pushed forward in search of a goal to kill the game, and this duly came in the shape of a sharp free kick to Raynes' right. The fifth goal quickly followed and Brazil began to look comfortable with a three goal cushion.
However England would not afford them that comfort, and came at them again, Barker producing an 18 yard sizzler to reduce the arrears. Although the scoring was complete England continued to press and Ward forced a further save in the last few moments of the game.
Not only had they shocked the hosts with three quality strikes they had served notice to the rest of the competition that they are a team full of goals.
